Volunteering really does change your perspective! I remember the first time I helped at an animal shelter. I walked in feeling a bit skeptical, but by the end, I realized how much joy those little moments of connection brought me. It was like a light bulb moment when I thought, 'Wow, I never expected that volunteering would change my perspective on life.'
That’s a nice story, but I wonder if we sometimes overemphasize the personal benefits of helping others. While it's great to feel good about giving back, there’s a risk of making it sound too self-serving. What if we focused simply on the act of kindness itself, rather than what we gain from it?
You raise an interesting point about the motivations behind helping others, Sky_Open. But I think that the beauty lies in the balance. Just like the video mentions, 'Every act of kindness creates a ripple effect.' It’s not just about us; it’s about those we help and how it impacts the larger community. Maybe if we consider both angles, we can find more meaningful ways to engage.
And, since I can, I want you to do something. Look to the person next to you and smile. How does it feel? Hi everyone, my name is Asshin and Cory, and I'm happy to be with you tonight. How helping others can make us happy. There are so many ways we can help, but the real question is, what makes you happy to be able to help? For me, it's a three things, volunteering and interact with the people and health benefits. The Indian activists, Mahatma Gandhi said, the best way to fund yourself is to lose yourself and the service of others. The definition of volunteering, when you do something without getting paid. In 2014, I had to do 25 of community service of ours. At that time, I had no experience, and I didn't know how it felt until I actually tried it. I engaged with toddlers or babies and Hamet hospitals. I learned how to be, sorry, I gained experience, and they taught me two important things, how to be patient, and how to always smile. Then I asked myself, why I had to do community service. Then I said, because the community always give you what you want, and this is time you give it back. And also, behind that, it creates connections for the future, maybe you dream job, want someone like you. Moving on to my second major point, and that is, interact with the people. How many of you traveled outside the country? And God, misunderstood, because of something you said or you did. It happens, right? All the time, even in our daily life. Let me tell you a short story. I traveled with my sister to Japan, and I told her, when we go to some restaurants, it's required for us to take our shoes off. She was so surprised, and I think she did not believe me actually. But when she saw it and her on eyes, she looked at me and said, you're right. I smile. That will be really disrespectful for the Japanese culture if you do not take off your shoes. Another example, the word of a name. It means mother and Turkish language. What if I tell you, it also means sister and Korean language. Isn't that interesting? This is why having a high level of cultural awareness is important. When I interact with the people, I gain experience, and also it made me confidence. I'm pairing myself now and before, I was not the same girl. I always isolated myself from big crowd, because I was shy and not confident. But let me tell you this. I truly regret that. Like so, truly I regret that. Because why? When you interact with the people, you will meet different types of people. Different culture, religion, race, gender, and so on. When you interact with them, you will gain knowledge and information. And that knowledge may be it will benefit for you future or maybe in your career. Moving on to my last major point, and that is what I truly love. And that is health benefits. Did you know helping someone can reduce your tension? If you ask me how, I would love to tell you how. I remember that day like it was yesterday. And I had a bad day. I couldn't wait to leave the campus. But her voice kept me from believing the campus. She said, is there someone who can help me to reduce her for the course? I look at her and I smile. I said, I can help you. We went to the library. I show with her how to reduce her. All she wanted is someone to help her to reduce her for the course. And all I wanted to do what I love to do and that is helping. We said goodbye to each other. But I met her after a couple of days ago. It was embarrassing actually conversation because I did not recognize her. But they say small change can have a big impact. When I say can have a big impact, she truly, remember who I am. Even when it's a small thing, but that she understands how I was helping her. And what does that mean? It made me feel very satisfied. So please, I found my passion through helping and to interact with the people and health benefits. Please find yours. Don't wait for someone to give you a signal to help. Start engaging with the community because that will benefit you, your health and the community. Thank you so much for listening.
It's interesting to think about how helping others can lead to self-discovery. One small way to start this journey is to volunteer at a local shelter. Even a couple of hours can make a difference and will probably teach you something new about yourself along the way.
